Tony Bowall is a Londoner from the deep south (Lewisham, actually). He has lived in Hove on the South Coast of England since the early 1990s and has been taking 'serious' photographs for almost 30 years.
Self-taught, he initially learned photographic printing by making 'Cibachrome' prints from slides (film!) at the Camerawork Community Darkrooms in London’s Bethnal Green, then moved on to colour negative and black and white printing. Nowadays all of Tony's work is digital.
Tony has a varied portfolio of travel photography, including his popular minimalist and colourful Greek images as well as photographs of India and Italy. He also loves close-up/macro images of flowers, many of which have been taken in his own garden (the Happy House garden) as well as in Sussex and beyond.
Apart from flowers he likes to find beauty, humour and the absurd in life – as is seen in some of his images from Greece, Italy, Egypt, Africa and India, as well as those taken closer to home in Hove and Brighton.
Tony has been interested in alternative philosophies for many years and has in his portfolio a number of calming images of Buddhist figures, many of which have been widely published. For more than 20 years Tony ran his own publishing and design business and his photographs have been used for many cover designs for international Buddhist publications and books, as well as the Viva Guide to Vegetarian Brighton.
Tony has a growing number of clients, both in the UK and overseas, who enjoy and collect his work. He is currently Vice-President of the Brighton & Hove Camera Club and Chair of the Hove Arts Group.
Tony's 'Happy House' venue, part of the Brighton and Hove Artists' Open House festival, is a highly popular stop-off for art lovers, with visitor numbers increasing every year. To find out more, click here.
